Nintendo's End

by John Collins

Nintendo became a household name in the early 80s when they released their Nintendo Entertainment System NES. They entered the market back then at a crucial moment. The industry of gaming consoles was actually in a kind of crisis after several Atari gaming consoles failed miserably. There were those who were predicting that the era of gaming consoles was at its end.

That was when Nintendo came along and gave the NES or the Nintendo Entertainment System to the world. It was like the video gaming industry got a new lease of life because of that. Nintendo became the industry leader right away after that. They solidified their leadership by releasing other excellent products such as the Super NES and the N64. They also came out with several titles that has become iconic in gaming.

Few years passed before the leadership of Nintendo in the gaming industry was even seriously challenged. That happened only when Sony released the PlayStation and Microsoft came out with the Xbox. These two devices used CDs instead of cartridges which is something that didn't really impact the consumers right away but it did have a tremendous effect on developers of the games. The use of discs makes it a lot more easy for them to create games.

Nintendo did not respond to the challenged posed by the devices right away and when they did it was a half-hearted effort at best. They released the Game Cube which is not much. For me that is the start of the decline of Nintendo. Their refusal to adapt to the changes that are happening to the world of gaming can only end up with the company cutting off all possible means of bailing itself out in the future.

Proof of this refusal to use these changes to their advantage are their efforts to block the use and sale of the r4 cards for their devices. They are still refusing to make any changes that will allow them to distribute their products in the best way.
